        About Groundwar

        Groundwar pins battles, sieges, treaties, revolutions and other historical events, plus notable people who were born, died, or both, within reach of any point you search, anywhere in the world.

        Everything is pulled live from Wikidata and Wikipedia, with map tiles from OpenStreetMap and place search from Nominatim. There's no separate database behind this. It's exactly what those sources know, which means:

        • Coverage reflects what's written up on Wikipedia, so well-documented places and people show up far more than obscure ones.
        • Distances are straight-line (as the crow flies), not travel distance.
        • Dates and locations are only as precise as Wikidata's own records: some are approximate or missing.
        • "Figures shown" filters by how many languages a person's Wikipedia article exists in, as a rough stand-in for fame.

        No account, no tracking, no server of its own. Just your browser talking to those public sources directly.
